myBSLbooks is a charitable project that has been set up to promote literacy, storytelling and increase access to books within the Deaf Community.
In 2007/2008 the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) carried out a study which found that Deaf children are underachieving in their education, pointing to a lack of literacy skills. 42% of Deaf children are less likely to achieve A - C grades at GCSE level compared to their hearing peers. The report went on to demonstrate a direct link between access to literature at an early age and academic achievement.
We launched myBSLbooks.com at the end of May 2008 to become the world’s first free online library for Deaf children, their schools, families and friends. The web-site features a range of classic, traditional and contemporary stories and books available for the first time in British Sign Language, (BSL) – their first language.
