NRAS is the only patient-led charity in the UK specifically for people with rheumatoid arthritis, their families and carers, providing information, support and advocacy. WHAT IS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS? Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic, progressive and disabling auto-immune disease affecting almost half a million people in the UK. It is a painful condition, can cause severe diability (this varies between individuals) and ultimately affects a person's ability to carry out everyday taks. RA is not an 'older person's disease' and is often confused with osteoarthritis. People can develop RA at any age, even as children. It doesn't only affect the joints. It can sometimes affect other parts of the body too, for example the eyes and lungs, though not for everyone. Apart from joint pain, stiffness and swelling, some people may have difficulty in sleeping, feel intensely tired and feel like they have bad flu.
